KDCC Supports Ukrainian Independence, City Flag-Raising Ceremony

Members of the Kenora & District Chamber of Commerce were proud to stand with Kenora’s Ukrainian community and celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day with a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall.

Held on August 21, Kenora’s Ukrainian community organized a gathering of Ukrainian community leaders, including business owners, Ukrainian refugees, and supporters of the culture ahead of the Independence Day of Ukraine, which is held on August 24.

President and Executive Director of the KDCC, Andy Scribilo and Ron Malashewski – both members of the local Ukrainian community – were featured as guests of honour and spoke about the significance of the day.

“I’m a lifelong resident of Kenora, and I went to Ukrainian school for many years. It was so important to support our [Ukrainian] community within the community,” said Scribilo, while wearing his traditional Ukrainian vy-shyvanka attire.

“We welcome our new immigrants as very much valued members of our community. They’re moving to a supportive community, and there will always be someone there to be supportive of what’s going on,” added Scribilo.

Peter Kirby, one of the organizers of the event, specifically shouted out the work of Kenora Supports Ukraine – who over the last few years, was able to raise over $100,000 to support 7 to 10 Ukrainian refugees in the community.

“I was born in 1953,” said Malashewski. “I have many memories of the Ukrainian community here. When our parents or grandparents came over, few could speak English. But they worked through the English barrier. And they knew they’d be looked after as they built their new life. For the newer residents here – you’re now in a safe place, and we welcome you.”

The day’s gathering also included tributes to 11 people who have passed away in the war with Russia. Organizers noted that members of the Kenora Ukrainian community gather on Thursdays at 12:15 pm at the Kenora Rotary Peace Park to honour those who have passed, and anyone is welcome to join in support.
